Gullah Story Teller

Betty Chavis Jones is the seventh child in her family and is the mother of four sons and fifteen grandchildren.

A native of Moncks Corner, SC she is a graduate of Berkeley Training High School and Rice Business College. She’s retired from the Bosch Corporation of serves Wesley United Methodist Church as a Lay Speaker. She is also a member of the Thurgood Marshall Golden Circle.

Recipient of several awards from the International Society of Poets and a recent recipient of the Pinnacle Achievement Art Award of Charleston, she also produced “Bonding Generations” a family history. Nonetheless, she mostly enjoys writing and telling “Gullah Stories.”

The experience of reading a Bible written in Gullah, transported her to her childhood days. Using the unique Gullah language, originally spoken by the ancestors in the low country of South Carolina, she began to write her own memories.

We will be blessed to listen to those stories in possibly the most wonderful sounds of the people from the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia. This language is made up of English and over 4,000 words from many different African languages. Very similar to Krio, one of the common languages spoken among the people from Sierra Leone, West Africa.
